AN ESSAY BY TODD IRWIN PUBLISHED IN GRAPHIC ARTS FUTURE:

Graphics are the language of our totality. Paintings, posters, sneaker patterns, endless-image-feeds, television splash animations, and neck tattoos are all are equal gestures of the contemporary condition; pacified and actualized by our senses. We tread the palate of absorbed and reconstituted authenticities in four-dimensions, acutely aware of time. Sound is part of this immense vocabulary: Fasten-seatbelt chimes punctuate painted landscapes//Smartphones vibrate basslines in our pockets//Synthesizers conjure up periphery colorfields//Soundbite loop news stories glitch toward entropy. Graphics are a unified plurality between waves of light and sound which allow us to extract and liberate the sublime from established orders. While electronic devices continue to grow smaller our and collective gaze turns further and further inward, the need for tangible platforms for us to project become more necessary. The sound system is an instrument—a DIY monolith composed of wire, plywood, paper, and magnets—designed to be aesthetically powerful, inclusive, and democratic.
